I LOVE IT WHEN MY VOICE SOUNDS TERRIBLE, AND THAT'S WHY I HOLD THE MICROPHONE ON THE WINDSCREEN! WEEEEE! MOST PERFORMERS AGREE: Making your voice sound as if it's going through a 3" speaker shooting down a 20 foot pipe is the coolest sound ever! we should all take a lesson from sandi patty & this mullet man:

Dynamic vs condenser microphones for Sandi Patty. The difference is simply that she cannot do this with that microphone. Of course a good soundman is required to deal with the feedback when they do this. Once your entire hand don't recover the Sm58 ball it can be handled but not without sacrifice in some frequencies. Of course a condenser sounds a lot better but lead on to many on stage problems if you have a rock band with many amplified instruments on stage and artists like these ones.

I think you can hold the mic like once in a while to get a different sound but it should definitely not be the whole song

Yes, holding mics in that manner don't exhibit the true nature of your voice.
