For this week's edition of "Old Skool Sleeper Mics," we turn our attention to the Electro-Voice 635a. This microphone ( the "a" version ) has been around since 1965. Pretty soon after this microphone came out, engineers started using it on all types of sources for both live and in the studio. This omni-directional dynamic microphone is a favorite among engineers for guitar amplifiers, vocals, & drums because as many of you already know, an omni-directional microphone won't exhibit proximity effect, and the tone of this particular microphone is unique and incredibly useful. It can be had for a song on the used market, and is usually found in almost any major studio's mic locker! Anywhere you'd use an SM-57, the 635a will more than likely excel.
